David Sedaris is someone special

David has a new book. The title is: DRESS YOUR FAMILY IN CORDUROY AND DENIM. I am not going to comment on the book. Instead, I wish to review the man, David Sedaris. Exactly a week ago I had the pleasure of spending some time with him. I met him at a book signing. David is such a generous man! Over 1000 people were waiting for his autograph. He spent a moment with each person, speaking to them in his intimate, and witty way. Every person felt they were special. This man has a gift! Finally, David finished signing every book.

We took David to his Chicago lodging, the home of a friend. It was after midnight. We were invited inside for a midnight nosh. A table awaited us, laden with all manner of vittles. We sat down with David and had a lovely chat that went on for quite a while. David asked me about my radio show. He was clearly appalled by the story of what had happened to me. This man really cares about other people! He began to brainstorm about ways that I can continue to bring my talent as an interviewer to another radio audience. I had met him once before when I had introduced him (along with Sarah Vowell) to an audience in Dayton, Ohio. This was back in the day when WYSO actually sponsored community events of this kind. David remembered that night and even though he barely knows me, I really feel that he is my advocate now. I had a camera but I did not take his photograph. I had a pen but I did not ask for his autograph. David Sedaris had given me the greatest gifts of all: decency and respect. He also makes me laugh.
